Nokia resumes patent action against Apple

leave a comment »

Nokia has increased its pressure on market leaders Apple after accusing it of breaching patent designs on almost all of its current products.

In what has been a heated battle between the manufacturers, Nokia sued Apple in October after arguing that its popular iPhone breached 10 of the company’s patents. But Apple launched a countersuit claiming that Nokia had in fact breached 13 of Apple’s patents in new designs.

Nokia’s new suit, filed through the International Trade Commission (ITC) has accused Apple of breaching another seven patents related to “user interface, as well as camera, antenna and power management technologies”.

“Apple’s acts have caused, and unless restrained and enjoined, will continue to cause, irreparable injury and damage to Nokia for which there is no adequate remedy at law,” Nokia argued.

The Finnish manufacturer, which has projected sales of 500m phones in 2010, has slumped in the mobile phone market since the introduction of the iPhone and approached US federal courts to ban any imports of Apple products in to the US to try and recoup losses.

But the seven patents mentioned in Nokia’s latest lawsuit have been questioned by those within the industry, arguing that lawyers will have a hard time differentiating between Nokia’s designs and those already flooding the market.
