Employment law reforms to hit UK hard

Impending alterations to the UK’s employment law system could cause severe problems for many UK businesses unless softened, Business Secretary Vince Cable has warned.

In a letter to fellow members of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance at this week’s party conference, Mr Cable raised numerous concerns regarding the potentially negative effect the upcoming Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) could bring.

Under reforms to the AWR, employers will be required by law to offer temporary workers the same rights as their full-time colleagues after they have been with an organisation for 12 weeks.

However, according to reports in the Daily Mail, Mr Cable has expressed serious doubts over how the AWR will be received by organisations struggling to gain a financial foothold after a lengthy recession.

The new legal rights are due to come into force next month and will cost businesses £1.5billion a year, and disputes in the Coalition over the reach of the regulations have highlighted ongoing tensions within government.

‘Unfortunately it has not been possible to find a way forward that would be acceptable to both parties,’ adds the letter.
